Have you ever seen an online ad for something you were just talking about?

In 2025, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri [denied](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DPRA3qyEgWw/?hl=en) that Instagram actively listens, with Facebook’s terms and conditions [saying](https://www.facebook.com/privacy/dialog/is-facebook-listening-to-my-conversation) much the same.

Mosseri’s statement, however, came just as Meta [announced](https://www.forbes.com/sites/kateoflahertyuk/2025/10/06/meta-ai-confirms-your-data-will-be-used-for-ads-heres-how-and-when/) that—for Facebook, Instagram and Threads users—data from your interactions with their AI will help [push](https://about.fb.com/news/2025/10/improving-your-recommendations-apps-ai-meta/) more ads your way. Lucky you.

Thanks to those algos, they don’t even need to listen to our conversations.
